Overview of the Scam
Bangladesh's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has dismantled a fraudulent investment group, arresting multiple suspects including a 22-year-old woman. The group operated a sophisticated scheme combining fake online job offers with investment fraud, using a counterfeit Dutch company website.
How the Scam Works
Stage 1: Job Recruitment
The suspects initiated contact via Telegram, offering part-time work involving rating tourist attractions and providing feedback through a fraudulent website. Promised daily earnings ranged from Tk800 to Tk2,500.
Stage 2: Trust Building with Initial Payments
In the early phase, scammers actually paid the promised rewards to establish credibility with the victim.
Stage 3: Investment Scheme Introduction
After completing initial tasks, victims were added to Telegram groups where the group promoted investment opportunities, claiming returns on investments ranging from Tk1 lakh to Tk10 lakh.
Stage 4: Escalating Financial Demands
Following the initial investment, scammers demanded additional payments, citing requirements to complete specific website visits, participate in different rounds, and fulfill various conditions to unlock promised returns.
Stage 5: Fund Extraction and Disappearance
Scammers collected approximately Tk24.19 lakh from the victim through multiple bank accounts and digital payment methods. Promised profits never materialized, and scammers eventually severed all communication.
Warning Signs and Red Flags
- Unrealistic Returns: Promising exceptional profits on modest investments (Tk1-10 lakh)
- Incremental Pressure for Payment: Initial small deposits followed by repeated requests for additional funds
- Counterfeit Websites: Poorly designed or suspicious domain names impersonating legitimate companies
- Unofficial Communication Channels: Legitimate job recruitment occurs through official websites, not personal social media accounts
- Initial Payment to Establish Trust: Small, real payments designed to lower victim's guard before larger extraction
- Non-Delivery of Promised Returns: Profits never appear, and scammers cut off contact
Prevention Tips
- Verify Online Job Offers: Always cross-check unfamiliar company job postings on official websites, LinkedIn, or other verified employment platforms
- Exercise Extreme Caution with Investment Pitches: High-return investment opportunities promoted on social media are highly suspect; consult licensed financial advisors instead
- Conduct Pre-Payment Verification: Verify the identity and business registration of entities requesting payment through multiple independent sources
- Avoid "Test Investments": Do not proceed to larger investments, even if small initial payments are honored
- Seek Trusted Advice: Always consult family members or trusted advisors before making financial commitments
