Vietnam Faces Rising Financial Fraud Using AI Deepfake Technology to Impersonate Bank Officials

Vietnam is experiencing a surge in financial fraud leveraging AI deepfake technology to impersonate bank officials and family members. As digital financial services expand, criminals use synthetic voices, doctored videos, and fake applications to steal money and personal information. Financial institutions are working to balance accessibility with security to protect customers from these sophisticated scams.

New Financial Fraud Methods

As Vietnam's digital financial services expand rapidly, more sophisticated fraud schemes are emerging. Traditionally, scammers relied on forged documents, identity impersonation, and stolen personal information. However, AI-powered fraud is now rapidly increasing.

How AI-Enabled Fraud Works

Deeface (deepfake) technology enables scammers to:

  • Create synthetic images and videos: High-precision manipulation or complete fabrication of real people's images and videos
  • Generate synthetic voices: Technologies like DeepVoice can replicate a specific person's voice with near-perfect accuracy
  • Exploit social media information: Information gathered from social networks is combined to build more convincing fraud scenarios

These technologies are misused to impersonate family members, bank employees, and public officials. Reported tactics include:

  • Posing as a family member via video call claiming urgent funds are needed
  • Impersonating bank staff to request authentication or verification
  • Promoting fraudulent loan apps for download
  • Directing victims to unofficial links and websites

Case Example: Fraudulent Apps

Vietnam's ABBank warned of a fake app called "AB Finance" that:

  • Was listed on the App Store
  • Used ABBank's logo and official slogans such as "30 years supporting millions of customers"
  • Offered loans up to 30 million VND (approximately $1,200)

ABBank confirmed they did not authorize, develop, or partner with this app. Multiple fraudulent apps impersonating major banks have been reported.

Red Flags and Prevention Tips

What Users Can Do

  1. Use Official Channels Only

    • Always verify loan offers and service information through official bank websites or apps
    • Information via email, SMS, or unsolicited calls should be treated with suspicion
  2. Protect Personal Information Strictly

    • Never share passwords, OTPs, or PIN codes
    • Scammers prioritize authentication credentials over immediate payment
  3. Avoid Suspicious Apps

    • Do not install apps from unknown sources
    • Watch for UI differences, logo alterations, or unusual design elements
  4. Be Cautious with Video Calls

    • Be wary of urgent requests for money, even from seemingly familiar faces
    • Remember that video and audio can be synthetically created

What Financial Institutions Must Do

Financial institutions need to shift from "more control" to "smarter control," including:

  • Placing fraud detection systems at the right touchpoints and timing
  • Avoiding over-reliance on single data sources for approval decisions
  • Establishing information-sharing mechanisms between financial institutions
  • Regular updates to combat evolving fraud techniques

Where to Report

If you suspect fraud:

  • Contact your financial institution directly using their official phone number
  • File a report with Vietnamese Police (Public Security)
  • Report to the State Bank of Vietnam (central bank)

Vietnam is at a critical juncture in maintaining digital financial convenience while strengthening fraud prevention measures.
