US Authorities Dismantle Crypto Investment Scam Targeting Russian-Speaking Victims, Seize 241 Websites and 112 Servers

Brooklyn prosecutors and the FBI have dismantled a major cryptocurrency investment fraud network targeting Russian-speaking victims. Following a three-year investigation, authorities seized 241 websites and 112 servers based in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. The scam used Facebook ads to lure victims into buying cryptocurrency and transferring it to fraudulent trading platforms, then demanded additional fees when victims attempted withdrawals.

How This Scam Works

This fraud network operated a multi-stage scheme targeting Russian-speaking victims:

Stage 1: Initial Recruitment Victims encounter Russian-language Facebook advertisements promising high-return investment opportunities.

Stage 2: Fake Advisor Contact Impostors posing as investment advisors contact victims by phone and instruct them to purchase cryptocurrency and transfer it to fraudulent trading platforms.

Stage 3: Funds Are Frozen Once victims access the platform, their accounts are locked, or they are charged additional fees allegedly for taxes and processing costs.

Stage 4: Recovery Scam Weeks after the initial theft, scammers contact victims again, offering to recover their stolen funds for an upfront payment.

Warning Signs

  • Unsolicited investment offers via social media should be treated with extreme caution
  • Phone calls from self-proclaimed investment advisors recommending cryptocurrency purchases are a red flag
  • Inability to withdraw profits or demands for additional fees indicate likely fraud
  • Follow-up contacts promising fund recovery represent a classic second-stage scam

Prevention Tips

  • Always independently research cryptocurrency investments and use only verified legitimate platforms
  • For advisors contacted via phone or message, verify their credentials directly through the official company website
  • Never respond to investment solicitations originating from social media ads
  • Demands for additional payments to withdraw funds are a major warning sign
  • If you cannot withdraw your funds completely or partially, immediately cease all contact with the platform operator

Where to Report

In the United States:

  • FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3): ic3.gov
  • Your local FBI field office
  • Brooklyn District Attorney's office (for this specific scheme)

In other countries:

  • Local law enforcement cybercrime units
  • National financial regulatory authorities
  • International cooperation channels with law enforcement
