Three Men Arrested in Switzerland for Elder Scam Using "Urgent Grandson" Ploy
Three men were arrested in Chiasso, Switzerland, suspected of defrauding elderly victims using a "fake grandson" scam. Posing as grandchildren needing urgent medical treatment, they pressured victims into sending large sums of cash and valuables. Following a report from a victim's family member on September 21, police recovered cash and valuables from the suspects' vehicle and prevented additional attempted frauds.
Overview
Three men were arrested in Chiasso, Switzerland, on suspicion of defrauding elderly victims using a phone scam method. The suspects include two Slovak nationals (ages 39 and 28) and one Czech national (age 30). Authorities suspect their involvement in multiple fraud cases in the canton of Ticino.
How the Scam Works
This is known as a "shock scam" or "grandparent scam":
- The perpetrator calls and claims to be the victim's grandchild
- They claim to have an urgent medical emergency requiring immediate payment
- They exploit the victim's fear and urgency to pressure them into sending money
- They demand thousands of francs in cash and valuables kept at home
Investigation and Arrest
A fraud occurred on September 21 in Melano. After the victim's family member reported the incident to the emergency center, police initiated an investigation. With technical support from Lugano City Police, cantonal police identified a suspicious vehicle with Czech registration plates.
The vehicle was stopped by Swiss federal customs and border security at Chiasso. Officers discovered cash and valuables inside. With additional information from a taxi driver and cooperation from Mendrisio City Police, another attempted fraud was also prevented on the same afternoon.
Warning Signs
- Unexpected family calls: If a relative calls unexpectedly, verify their identity through alternative contact methods before believing their story
- Pressure and urgency: Demands to act immediately or send money quickly are typical red flags
- Unusual payment requests: Legitimate emergencies are never handled through cash or valuables transferred directly
- Verification difficulties: If you cannot confirm the caller's true identity, be especially cautious
Prevention Tips
- Always verify the caller's identity through independent means before responding to any money requests
- If a family member claims to have an emergency, hang up and call them back using a known contact number
- Never send cash or valuables to unfamiliar individuals or through unconventional methods
- Family members should discuss these scam tactics in advance and establish code words or verification procedures
- Be skeptical of any request that creates artificial urgency
How to Report
If you receive a suspicious call or fall victim to fraud, contact your local police immediately. In Ticino, contact the Cantonal Police of Ticino (Polizia Cantonale Ticinese).
