Taiwan investment scams escalate: Fraudsters shift to gold and property collateral demands
A man in Taichung lost over 2.5kg of gold to investment fraud. Police report that as cash withdrawals face increased anti-fraud scrutiny at banks, scammers are shifting tactics to demand gold and property collateral. Authorities warn against unofficial apps and stock investment group solicitations on social media.
How the Scam Works
Investment fraud groups use social media to attract victims with promises of "high returns, zero risk, guaranteed profits." Victims are directed to download unauthorized apps or join stock investment groups. In the initial phase, scammers show small "profits" to lower victims' guard, then encourage larger investments.
Shift in Fraudster Tactics
Traditionally, scammers preferred cash because it leaves a traceable trail useful for money laundering. However, Taiwan's enhanced anti-fraud measures at banks have increased the risk of intervention by bank staff or police during large cash withdrawals.
To circumvent these protections, scammers have adapted:
- Gold Demands: Many households own gold; rising prices make it highly valuable, easily convertible to cash, and difficult to trace
- Property Collateral: Scammers pressure victims to mortgage land or homes, then demand the proceeds as "investment" funds
Warning Signs and Red Flags
Common indicators of investment scams include:
- Phrases like "guaranteed profit" or "risk-free investment"
- Recruitment via social media or messaging apps rather than official channels
- Requests to download unauthorized apps
- Impersonation of financial experts or famous market commentators
- Display of initial profits followed by pressure for larger investments
- Inability to verify registration with legitimate securities firms or fund companies
Prevention Tips
- Pause and Verify: Always confirm that investment platforms and assets are legally registered with government authorities
- Use Legitimate Channels: Conduct stock investments only through government-licensed securities or fund companies
- Avoid Social Media Recruitment: Decline invitations to unknown investment groups or to download unofficial apps
- Refuse Non-Cash Demands: Requests to provide gold or property collateral for investment are red flags for fraud
- Resist Escalation Pressure: Don't be swayed by early profit displays to increase your investment
Where to Report
If you suspect investment fraud, immediately contact Taiwan's anti-fraud hotline at 165 or report to police at 110.
