A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Sri Lanka for allegedly scamming a victim out of Rs. 12.69 million through Telegram by promising lucrative online business opportunities. The North Western Provincial Unit of the Computer Crime Investigation Division arrested the suspect and an alleged accomplice who received part of the stolen money.

Case Overview

A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Sri Lanka's North Western Province for allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs. 12.69 million through Telegram by promising lucrative online business opportunities. The Computer Crime Investigation Division arrested the suspect along with an alleged accomplice.

How the Scam Works

This financial fraud typically operates through the following steps:

  1. Initial Contact: The scammer reaches out via Telegram to potential victims
  2. False Promise: Claims of easy money through legitimate-sounding online business activities
  3. Payment Request: Requests initial investment or participation fees
  4. Theft: Takes the money and never delivers promised returns

Investigation Details

After the victim filed a complaint with the North Western Provincial Unit of the Computer Crime Investigation Division, investigators discovered that Rs. 500,000 of the stolen funds had been deposited into the suspect's bank account. The 36-year-old resident of Nawagattegama was arrested on charges of fraud and aiding and abetting. Further investigations are ongoing.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Unsolicited Messages: Strangers contacting you via Telegram, WhatsApp, or similar apps with business offers
  • Unrealistic Promises: Guarantees of high returns or easy money with minimal effort
  • Upfront Payment Demands: Legitimate opportunities don't require payment before demonstrating legitimacy
  • Lack of Verifiable Information: No official website, no business registration, or inability to verify company details
  • Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often create urgency to prevent victims from thinking critically

Prevention Steps

  1. Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Offers: Never engage with business proposals from unknown sources through messaging apps
  2. Refuse Initial Payments: Never send money to verify earnings or activate accounts
  3. Seek Independent Verification: Always consult friends, family, or financial advisors before sending money
  4. Research the Company: Check official registries and websites to confirm legitimacy
  5. Keep Records: Save screenshots of all communications in case you need to report fraud

Where to Report

In Sri Lanka, report to the Computer Crime Investigation Division or local police. In other countries, contact your national cybercrime unit or consumer protection agency. Early reporting increases the chances of recovering funds and preventing further victims.
