New Scam Method in Used Vehicle Sales: Fraudsters Impersonate Notaries to Steal Millions via Banking Apps
Turkish authorities arrested 17 suspects in a fraud scheme targeting used vehicle sellers. The criminals impersonated notaries and tricked victims into approving money transfers through banking apps. The operation uncovered 70 fraud cases with total losses of 4.2 million lira.
How the Scam Works
This fraud ring operated through the following stages:
Initial Contact
- Criminals identify individuals selling used vehicles online
- They pose as potential buyers
- They express interest and mention sending a deposit (kaparó)
Fraud Execution
- Criminals create money transfer requests through banking apps labeled "deposit"
- Victims mistake this for a legitimate transaction request
- When approved, funds are immediately withdrawn from the victim's account
Evolved Method
After their initial approach was detected, the group developed a more sophisticated technique:
- Fraudsters call victims impersonating notaries (public officials)
- This authority helps establish false credibility and trust
- They then execute banking app transfer requests
- Victims approve transfers believing they are conducting legitimate notarial business
Warning Signs
- Rapid progression from initial inquiry to deposit demand
- Unsolicited calls from people claiming to be notaries or government officials
- Unexpected money transfer requests appearing in your banking app
- Requests for personal or banking authentication details
- Unwillingness to conduct video calls or in-person meetings
- Pressure to complete transactions quickly
Prevention Tips
Verification Steps
- Always independently verify notary contact through official notary offices
- Never conduct important financial transactions based solely on phone calls
- Confirm the identity of transaction counterparties through multiple methods
Banking App Safety
- Never approve unrecognized transfer requests
- Contact your bank immediately if you see unfamiliar requests
- Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts
- Remember that banks never ask customers to enter authentication codes

- Use secure, established payment methods for online sales
- Consider using licensed intermediaries for significant transactions
- Be suspicious of deals that move too quickly
- Keep records of all communications
Where to Report
- Report fraud suspicions to local police immediately
- Contact your bank to report unauthorized transactions
