The verification will be prioritized in high-risk areas like Marketplace, Dating, and Groups. However, Meta clarifies that verification only confirms someone is a real person, not their trustworthiness or transaction reliability.

Meta Introduces Identity Verification to Combat AI-Generated Fraud

Meta has launched a free identity verification service called "Facebook Verified" using selfie video authentication to address the surge in fraud linked to AI-generated fake accounts.

How the New System Works

To register for Facebook Verified, users record a short selfie video that the system compares against their profile photo. The verification process takes only a few minutes.

After verification is complete, Meta states it will delete the selfie video and facial data within 30 days, prioritizing user privacy.

Eligibility Requirements

The service is available to users who meet these criteria:

Age 18 or older
Have a clean history of compliance with Facebook's Community Standards
No fraudulent activity record

Currently, only personal accounts are supported. Pages and Professional Mode accounts are not yet eligible.

The AI Fraud Problem
