Italian Police Arrest Man Who Posed as Gas Technician to Defraud Elderly Woman in Turin

Turin police arrested a 47-year-old Italian man for burglary after he posed as a heating technician to defraud a 75-year-old woman. He convinced her to collect jewelry and cash under the pretense of checking for negative influences on inspection equipment, then fled with valuables worth approximately €15,000. Police recovered all stolen items immediately after his arrest.

How the Scam Worked

The perpetrator used a multi-stage approach to commit the fraud:

False Identity: The suspect posed as a heating technician or gas inspector authorized by the condominium administrator to conduct routine equipment checks.

Building Trust Gradually: He approached the victim at a supermarket exit and used polite, friendly demeanor to establish initial rapport and credibility.

Deceptive Pretext: He claimed to need to check whether household items might negatively interfere with his inspection equipment. Under this plausible-sounding technical justification, he persuaded the elderly woman to gather her jewelry and cash into a bag.

Distraction and Theft: While distracting the victim, he fled with the collected valuables.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The 47-year-old suspect was under house arrest with restricted hours of leave. Police became suspicious of his frequent movements using different vehicles. He regularly traveled to a garage in a Turin suburb using a relative's car, then rode a high-displacement motorcycle with fake license plates.

Using municipal automatic license plate readers, police tracked the motorcycle's passage through Novara and Vercelli provinces. This timing coincided with a theft reported by a 75-year-old woman in Vercelli. Police intercepted the suspect near the garage, found gold jewelry on his person, and coordinated with Novara and Vercelli offices to confirm the connection.

Immediate police action resulted in recovery of all stolen property—jewelry including the victim's wedding ring and cash—totaling approximately €15,000.

How to Protect Yourself from This Type of Scam

Verify Official Visitors: When someone claims to represent a utility company, municipality, or government agency, ask for identification and call the organization directly using a phone number you find independently. Do not use contact information the visitor provides.

Expect Written Notice: Legitimate maintenance and inspections are typically announced in writing beforehand. Unexpected visits are a red flag.

Never Gather Valuables: No legitimate inspection requires you to collect jewelry or cash. Refusing to do so is appropriate and safe.

Consult Before Deciding: Always discuss unexpected requests with family members or trusted friends before complying.

Control Access: Even if someone shows an ID, verify it through official channels before allowing entry to your home.

Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter suspicious visitors or suspect fraud, contact local police immediately or call the emergency number 112 (in Italy) to file a report and enable police to act quickly.

Families and communities can help protect vulnerable members by discussing these risks and establishing a system where elderly relatives contact them before allowing strangers into their homes.
