Italian Octogenarian Loses €80,000 in Online Investment Fraud Scheme

An 80-year-old man from northeastern Italy fell victim to an online investment scam that defrauded him of approximately €80,000. Fraudsters impersonating financial consultants used a digital platform to display fictitious gains, convincing him to make successive wire transfers to foreign accounts. Following suspicious banking activity alerts and police investigation, a 69-year-old suspect in Catania was identified and charged.

How the Scam Works

In October 2025, an elderly resident of Bassano del Grappa in northeastern Italy discovered an investment opportunity online. He was subsequently contacted by individuals claiming to be financial consultants. Through a digital platform, these fraudsters displayed fictitious investment returns and convinced him to make successive wire transfers. Over time, the victim transferred approximately €80,000 to foreign bank accounts.

How It Was Discovered

The fraud came to light when the victim's bank detected anomalies in his digital wallet and flagged suspicious activity. The victim contacted the Carabinieri (Italian police), initiating an investigation. Authorities traced the money flow and identified a transaction of approximately €22,300 to an Italian bank account. Following this transaction trail, investigators identified a 69-year-old man in Catania, Sicily, who was subsequently charged.

Warning Signs

  • Unsolicited investment offers from unknown sources or unfamiliar websites
  • Promises of unrealistically high investment returns
  • Pressure to act quickly on investment decisions
  • Communication only through digital platforms with no verifiable identity
  • Requests for progressive payments, starting small and escalating
  • Use of unofficial digital platforms for fund transfers
  • Difficulty verifying the legitimacy of the financial institution

Prevention Tips

  1. Verify credentials: Only engage with investment professionals registered with legitimate financial regulatory authorities
  2. Check online: Research the company and individual claiming to offer investment services

  4. Consult your bank: Discuss suspicious investment offers with your financial institution before taking action
  5. Seek second opinions: Discuss major financial decisions with trusted family members or advisors
  6. Document everything: Keep detailed records of all communications and transactions
  7. Use secure channels: Conduct financial transactions only through verified, regulated platforms

Where to Report

  • Italian Police (Carabinieri): Emergency number 112
  • Your bank: Immediately report any suspicious account activity
  • Financial Regulatory Authority: Report unauthorized investment schemes
  • Consumer Protection Agencies: Seek assistance and file formal complaints
