Investment Scam Uses AI-Manipulated Images and Fake News to Lure Brazilian Users

A investment scam targeting Brazilian users falsely uses the name and image of prominent businessman Luciano Hang. Scammers combine AI-generated images with fake news articles to lure users to fraudulent investment platforms promising daily returns of up to 10,000 reais. Both Hang and his company have denied any connection.

Scam Overview

A investment scam using the name and image of Luciano Hang, founder of the Brazilian retail chain Havan, has been reported. Scammers create a false narrative claiming Hang was attacked for political reasons and use this fabricated story to promote fraudulent investment platforms.

How the Scam Works

Creating a False Narrative

Scammers invent a story claiming Hang is being persecuted by politician Fernando Haddad because of a new financial platform. This scenario is built on a fictional attack that never occurred, designed to make the scheme seem credible and urgent.

Using AI-Generated Images

Images used in the scam are created or manipulated using AI tools. These include pictures of an injured Hang, the politician, and composite images of supposed attack scenes. Google's AI detection tool SynthID confirmed these images were AI-fabricated.

Creating Fake News Articles

Scammers impersonate the major newspaper O Globo, creating false articles claiming Hang developed a financial platform generating 20,000 reais weekly in profits. These appear similar to real news sites but operate from different, fraudulent domains.

Spreading Through Social Media

False article links are posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, directing users to investment platforms. Alternate versions claim association with famous soccer player Neymar to increase credibility.

Promising Unrealistic Returns

The investment platforms claim users can earn 3,000 to 10,000 reais daily or 20,000 reais weekly. These figures are unrealistic for actual financial markets and are classic scam indicators.

Warning Signs to Recognize

Verify Domain Addresses

Legitimate news sites use official, consistent domains. If an article's URL differs from the official domain, it's likely fraudulent.

Check Visual Structure

Fake news pages may appear similar to real sites but contain subtle differences in layout and graphic elements that don't match the original.

Be Wary of Impossible Returns

No legitimate investment guarantees daily returns like 10,000 reais. Such promises are a clear red flag for fraud.

Verify Celebrity Connections

If a prominent figure is supposedly linked to an investment platform, verify through their official channels before engaging.

Prevention Strategies

Question Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers

Always be skeptical of profit promises that seem unrealistic. Legitimate investments offer gradual, modest returns.

Secure Your Accounts

Use unique passwords for different accounts and enable two-factor authentication on important accounts.

Protect Personal Information

Never share passwords, verification codes, or banking information. Legitimate organizations never request sensitive data directly.

Keep Systems Updated

Regularly update applications and operating systems to patch security vulnerabilities.

How to Report and Seek Help

Report to Social Media Platforms

When you encounter this type of fraudulent content, report it directly to the relevant social media platform.

If You Suffered Financial Loss

  1. File a police report and obtain a case number for documentation
  2. Gather evidence including screenshots, payment receipts, chat conversations, and website URLs
  3. Contact your bank immediately to report the fraud and explore recovery options
  4. Report the incident to consumer protection agencies
