Fake Investment Advisors Scamming Customers Through Social Media and Messaging Apps

Argentina's Banco Provincia has issued an urgent alert about the rise of investment fraud involving fake financial advisors. Scammers contact victims via social media, WhatsApp, and Telegram using fake identities of legitimate companies, promising high returns and quick profits to gain trust before stealing their funds.

How the Scam Works

Scammers use social engineering techniques to target victims through social media, WhatsApp, and Telegram, posing as representatives of legitimate financial companies. They promise high returns and quick profits to gain trust before attempting to steal funds.

Once contact is established, the scammer directs the victim to create accounts on investment applications. During this process, they request screen sharing or ask the victim to install remote access software on their phone or computer. This gives the fraudster visibility of security codes, passwords, and banking credentials, allowing them to execute unauthorized transfers.

To sustain the deception longer, the criminal network creates fake platforms displaying fictitious balances and returns that simulate real earnings. When victims attempt to withdraw money, the fake advisors invent technical problems, tax requirements, or pending commissions. They then request additional payments to "release" the trapped funds before cutting off all communication.

Warning Signs

  • Guaranteed high returns: Promises of "assured profits" or "guaranteed yields" are major red flags
  • Communication limited to messaging apps: Legitimate financial institutions use official channels, not personal social media
  • Requests for screen sharing or remote access: Real banks never ask for this type of access
  • Repeated delays on withdrawals: Constant technical excuses when trying to access funds indicate fraud
  • Pressure for additional payments: Being asked to send more money to "unlock" initial investments

Prevention Tips

  • Never share usernames, passwords, or security codes with anyone
  • Be skeptical of unsolicited investment offers, especially on social media
  • Do not download applications recommended by strangers
  • Never access your online banking while someone else guides you through the process
  • Be aware that app screens can be emulated by fraudsters
  • Verify any financial advisor's credentials through your bank's official website or phone line
  • Only use applications downloaded directly from official app stores

If You Suspect Fraud

Immediately stop communicating with the suspected fraudster and contact your bank through official channels. If you have already been victimized, file a report with authorities to block unauthorized digital access. Most banks, including Banco Provincia, maintain security centers with detailed guides for protecting your accounts.
