Fake Doctor Scam Uses Real Medical Information to Defraud Cancer Patients

The University Hospital Erlangen in Germany warns of phone scammers using real medical information to trick victims into paying for fake cancer treatment. The criminals pose as doctors and reference authentic patient health records to build credibility before demanding payment.

How This Scam Works

Scammers have obtained real medical information about victims in advance and use it during phone calls. The fake doctor references actual medical data from the victim's hospital records, which lowers the victim's guard and builds false credibility. Once trust is established, the scammer demands payment for expensive cancer treatment.

Warning Signs

You can identify this scam by recognizing these red flags:

  • Demands for payment by phone: Legitimate hospitals do not request payment via phone calls in the initial stages. They send invoices by mail or formal billing documents
  • Unsolicited contact with medical details: Even if the caller knows details about your medical history, this does not confirm legitimacy without proper identification verification
  • Request for wire transfers or digital payments: Insisting on bank transfers or digital payment methods is a common scam indicator
  • Pressure and urgency: Claiming that payment must be made immediately to start treatment is a classic pressure tactic

Prevention Tips

  1. Hang up and call the hospital directly: If you receive a suspicious call, do not provide information. Instead, end the call and contact your hospital using the official phone number you know
  2. Protect personal information: If you receive unsolicited inquiries claiming to be from medical or government institutions, do not provide additional personal details
  3. Inform family members: Especially for elderly relatives, make sure they are aware of this scam method in advance
  4. Keep records: Document the phone number and details of suspicious calls so you can report them to police if needed

Where to Report

If you receive a suspected scam call, contact:

  • German Police (Franconia region): Call 110
  • Local Police Fraud Department: Contact your regional police office for cyber and phone fraud
