Elderly man in Genoa defrauded by fake jewelry robbery scam; two suspects arrested
An elderly resident in Genoa, Italy was defrauded through a fake family emergency scheme involving a fabricated jewelry robbery. Scammers convinced the victim that a relative was involved in a theft and demanded money and valuables to resolve the situation. Police tracked the suspects using surveillance footage and recovered approximately 10,000 euros in gold and jewelry.
How the Scam Works
This fraud scheme uses a fictional family emergency as its core mechanism. Scammers contact the victim claiming a relative has been involved in a theft or robbery and demand immediate delivery of cash and valuables (jewelry, precious items) to resolve the alleged crisis. The urgency and emotional manipulation are critical elements that compromise the victim's judgment.
The Incident
On the afternoon in question, at approximately 2:40 PM, Genoa police received a report of an elderly person falling victim to this scam. The perpetrators obtained cash and valuables from the victim and fled in the direction of Corso Carbonara. The police mobile unit was already conducting surveillance operations in areas known for targeting elderly residents.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Investigators utilized surveillance camera footage from multiple locations throughout the city to track the suspects' escape route. Cameras near the victim's residence captured images of a man leaving at a time consistent with the crime. Officers traced his path through the city center to Via Roma, where they observed him entering a residential building containing a guest accommodation facility around 3:00 PM.
Police reached the room where the 38-year-old suspect was hiding, finding him with a 37-year-old accomplice. A search recovered a suitcase containing multiple pieces of jewelry and gold items valued at approximately 10,000 euros. All items were identified and returned to the victim. The 38-year-old was arrested and detained at Marassi prison pending trial. The 37-year-old was charged with the same offense.
Warning Signs
Common characteristics of schemes targeting elderly people include:
- Pressure and urgency: Phrases like "act immediately" or "time is running out"
- Emotional appeals: Stories focused on family members in distress
- Identity avoidance: Vague responses when asked for specific details
- Demand for direct payment: Insistence on cash or valuables rather than bank transfers
- Resistance to verification: Reluctance to allow the victim to independently confirm the story
Prevention and Response
- Verify independently: If contacted about a family emergency, call that family member directly using a known phone number
- Seek counsel: Discuss any significant financial decision with trusted family members before acting
- Report suspicious activity: Contact police immediately upon receiving suspicious calls or visits
- Protect valuables: Never hand over cash or jewelry without legitimate, verifiable reasons
- Report all attempts: File a police report regardless of whether money was actually lost
- Stay informed: Keep up with current scam tactics through official channels and trusted sources
