Digital Fraud and Prevention: How Criminals Use AI and Social Engineering to Commit Scams

Brazilian police authorities explain how criminals exploit urgency and fear to commit digital fraud. With AI technology, false situations are becoming more convincing. Experts advise against immediate responses to suspicious contacts and recommend verifying through official channels.

Psychological Tactics Used by Scammers

Criminals exploit key emotions to execute fraud:

  • Urgency and Fear: Making victims believe immediate action is required
  • Personal Information Misuse: Using names and locations harvested from social media to build false trust
  • AI Technology: Replicating voices and messages to create more convincing scenarios

According to Delegate Paulo Barbosa of São Paulo's Cybercrime Division, "AI technology has made fraud methods increasingly sophisticated."

Common Fraud Patterns

1. Bank Impersonation Scam

Fraudsters pose as bank employees, claiming unauthorized transactions or account problems. They then request personal information, security codes, or instructions for account operations.

How to Respond: Hang up immediately and contact your bank through official channels. Never use phone numbers, links, or contacts provided by the suspected fraudster.

2. Fake Family Member Scam (AI-Enhanced)

Scammers create fake profiles or hijack existing accounts to impersonate family members. Using AI technology, they can even reproduce the person's voice.

In one documented case, a suspect posed as a victim's son, claiming his car had broken down on a highway and requesting payment via Pix for supposed mechanic services.

How to Respond: Never send money immediately. Instead, call the family member using a known phone number and verify their story directly.

3. High-Return Investment Fraud

Criminals pose as financial experts on social media, promising unusually high investment returns. They often use paid advertising to reach many people and create pressure for immediate decisions.

How to Respond: Be cautious of any investment opportunity promising returns well above market rates, especially when demanding quick transfers.

4. Counterfeit Shopping Websites

During peak shopping seasons like Black Friday, fraudsters create fake store pages offering electronics, appliances, and other products at prices far below market value.

How to Respond: Before purchase, carefully verify the URL and compare prices across legitimate retailers. Avoid accessing payment pages through links in unsolicited messages.

Five Warning Signs of Digital Fraud

  1. Urgent Money Requests: Pressure to act immediately
  2. Unknown Links: Suspicious URLs from questionable sources
  3. Below-Market Prices: Abnormally cheap offerings
  4. Password/Code Requests: Attempts to obtain authentication credentials
  5. Unexpected Money Requests from Strangers: Requests from supposed family members

When in doubt, verify through official channels.

Prevention Strategies

Behavioral Measures

  • Avoid automatic responses to unexpected contacts or offers
  • Always verify identity before sending money to supposed family members
  • Contact banks directly if someone claiming to be a bank employee calls you

Technical Measures

  • Enable two-factor authentication on important accounts
  • Use different passwords for different services
  • Never share passwords or security codes with anyone

What to Do If You've Been Scammed

Immediate Actions

  1. Contact Your Bank: Report the fraud through official channels immediately
  2. Block Your Card: Disable any compromised cards
  3. Request Special Return Mechanism (MED): For Pix transfers, request the Special Return Mechanism within 80 days of the transaction
  4. File a Police Report: Create an official record of the fraud

Follow-Up Actions

  • Preserve all conversations, screenshots, Pix receipts, and bank statements
  • Change all passwords and update your main email and related services
  • Regularly monitor for unauthorized accounts or transactions linked to your CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID)
  • Use the Central Bank's Registrato service to check for accounts and loans registered in your name

Understanding the Pix Special Return Mechanism (MED)

Brazil's Central Bank allows victims to request fund recovery within 80 days of the fraudulent transaction (extendable to 90 days after). However, recovery is not guaranteed—it depends on compliance with the mechanism's rules and individual case analysis.

Where to Report Fraud (São Paulo)

  • Digital Police Station: 24-hour online reporting available
  • Local Police Precinct: In-person reporting
  • Anonymous Tip Line 181: Confidential reporting by phone
  • Web Anonymous Report: Online anonymous reporting

Important: Always preserve screenshots and documentation before deleting conversations related to the fraud.
