AI-Powered Scam Detection Tools Enhanced to Combat Rising SMS and Phone Fraud

Malwarebytes has upgraded its Scam Guard fraud detection feature to combat increasingly sophisticated scams. A survey reveals that 25% of victims experienced harassment or extortion, 20% had personal information exposed, and 15% lost money. Phone and SMS phishing attacks are among the most common fraud types, yet many smartphone users mistakenly believe built-in security is sufficient protection.

A Malwarebytes survey reveals the serious impact of fraud on victims. Approximately 25% of victims experienced harassment or extortion, about 20% had their personal information exposed, and 15% suffered direct financial losses. More concerning is that half of respondents feel unprepared to face increasingly sophisticated AI-powered fraud threats.

The Gap Between Perceived and Actual Security

A dangerous disconnect exists among smartphone users regarding security. 55% of iPhone users and 50% of Android users believe their phones' built-in security features are sufficient for protection. However, fraud techniques have become far more sophisticated, and standard security measures alone cannot adequately defend against modern threats.

Rising Fraud Tactics

According to data collected through Malwarebytes' Scam Guard tool, phone fraud ranks among the five most frequently encountered fraud types. Particularly alarming is the sharp increase in SMS phishing attacks, including exploitation of messaging apps like WhatsApp. Last year, Malwarebytes detected over 800,000 distinct Android malware variants, with predictions that this could exceed one million this year.

Enhanced Scam Guard Features

Scam Guard is a free tool integrated into the Malwarebytes app on both Android and iOS. It uses artificial intelligence to analyze SMS messages, emails, phone numbers, links, and suspicious messages, determining whether they represent fraud attempts and offering guidance.

The newly redesigned "Text and Call Protection" feature includes:

Enhanced URL scanning: Detects hidden links and shortened URLs that may conceal malicious content
Romance scam pattern recognition: Identifies typical characteristics of romance fraud, such as unexpected money requests
Automatic call filtering: The "Call Protection" tool compares incoming numbers against blacklists, automatically blocking and/or reporting suspected fraud calls

Call filtering is now available on iOS, with Android deployment expected later this summer.
