75-Year-Old Man Lost €10,000 to Investment Scam Through False Online Investment Promises
A 75-year-old man in Germany fell victim to an investment scam after responding to online investment promises. The scammer first requested a small amount, then falsely claimed the investment had grown to €40,000 and demanded a €10,000 guarantee fee to withdraw it. The promised money never materialized.
About the Investment Scam
In the Werdohl region of Germany, a 75-year-old man lost approximately €10,000 to an investment scam after being deceived online. Criminal police have launched an investigation into the case.
How the Scam Worked
Stage One: Building Trust
The victim discovered a website advertising investment opportunities on the internet. He called the phone number displayed on the site to inquire further.
Stage Two: First Payment Request
The scammer instructed the victim to transfer several hundred euros as an initial investment. The victim complied with this request.
Stage Three: False Profit Claims and Additional Demands
Days later, the same person contacted the victim again with false information that his investment had grown to €40,000. The scammer then claimed that to withdraw this amount, the victim needed to send €10,000 in advance as a bank guarantee fee. The victim transferred this money as well.
Stage Four: Non-Payment
The promised €40,000 was never transferred to the victim.
Warning Signs to Recognize
- Be skeptical of unsolicited online investment offers: Verify any investment opportunity through independent research before committing funds
- Watch for escalating payment requests: When small payments are followed by larger amounts, this is a classic fraud pattern
- "Withdrawal fees" are a red flag: Requiring advance payment to access profits is a hallmark of investment fraud
- Impersonation of legitimate institutions: Scammers often pose as established financial organizations
Prevention Tips
- Avoid rushed decisions: Legitimate investments do not pressure you for immediate action
- Verify independently: Always research any investment proposal through trusted sources
- Never pay upfront to access returns: This requirement is almost always an indicator of fraud
- Consult trusted advisors: Discuss questionable investment proposals with family members or financial professionals before taking action
How to Report
